The Tower of Shamil
Dagestan Highland, North Caucasus. This tower in Gunib village is said to be erected in the memory of Shamil, the legendary ruler of Caucasus and rebel against Russian troops. This hill was his last stronghold before he surrendered to Russian general Count Baryatinskiy in 1868. it was the last episode of lengthy Caucasian war in establishing Russian empire rule in the whole region. However Shamil was not executed. On the contrary, he was accepted by the Russian emperor, met him many times and eventually sweared to Russian crown. He died making his hadj to Mekka.
